GHOTUL TRADITIONS
Story Behind Ghotul
About Us

MEANING OF GHOTUL
Ghotul takes its name from the Muria–Gond tradition of Bastar — an autonomous, residential space where young people came together to live, learn, and grow. Knowledge was passed down through generations in the form of music, dance, storytelling, and celebration — always as shared experiences.
A Ghotul was never just a structure. It was a living community, alive with rhythm, laughter, and belonging.
Inspired by this spirit, Ghotul Backpackers Hostel is reimagined as a modern-day home for travellers. At Ghotul, you do not just stay — you belong.
A Home Where Every Journey Begins -
At Ghotul, we believe every traveler deserves more than just a bed — they deserve a home, a community, and a story to carry forward.
History and Function
Lingo, the supreme deity and the heroic ancestor of the tribe, is regarded as the founder of the first Ghotul and remains at the very center of Ghotul culture. The Ghotul functions under the guidance of an elder facilitator, bringing together young, unmarried boys and girls as its members.
The girl members of the Ghotul are known as Motiaris, while the boys are called Cheliks. Their respective leaders, Belosa for the girls and Siredar for the boys, guide them in maintaining discipline, unity, and responsibility within the community.
Members of the Ghotul are taught the values of cleanliness, discipline, and hard work. They learn to take pride in their appearance, respect themselves, and honour their elders. Above all, the Ghotul instills a strong sense of public service and community responsibility, shaping individuals who contribute positively to society.

THE PROBLEM WE SAW
When Shivani and Rahul came to Guwahati in 2024, they struggled to find a safe, respectful, and community-driven hostel. Most existing options were either unaffordable or lacked the sense of safety and decency travellers deserve — with issues like misconduct, poor hygiene, and the open tolerance of illegal substances making them unfit for those seeking a supportive and comfortable environment.
Thats where the idea of Ghotul was born — a space that redefines travel stays by combining comfort with community, where travellers feel secure, respected, and truly at home.

THE ROOTS THAT INSPIRE US
Shivani grew up in hostel life at Navodaya Vidyalaya, where community and sharing shaped her values — inspired by Muria-Gond tradition, she reimagined it in Guwahati.
